Rutherford Student Violence Prevention

Program

Adolescents are easily ensnared in the depressive hopelessness and helplessness of a classmate in crisis. This program instills a sense of social responsibility and competence by educating students about the signs and symptoms of depression and self-destructive behavior. Students learn how to deal with classmates who may be contemplating self destructive behavior.

Through didactic presentation and small group experiences, which includes discussion and role-play, students are taught the warning signs of depression and suicidal behavior. They are coached on the process of helping the at-risk student get the assistance they need. In addition to identifying students who may have otherwise "fallen through the cracks", this program equips students with a life skill of recognizing problems that require more help than they can provide, and demonstrates what to do about it. The V.P.P. makes a real contribution to empowering students who might have otherwise gotten in over their heads in trying to assist a fellow student. This program is coordinated by Mr. Doug Loucks.
