Welcome to the Student Assistance Program Homepage

The Student Assistance Program was founded in 1983. It was created in response to growing concerns over the impact of drug and alcohol related problems on students' academic and social functioning. Following the same developmental path as employee assistance programs, a mental health focus was quickly added to the Student Assistance Program.

The Student Assistance Program is based on a prevention model that seeks to address the risk factors that have been shown to increase substance abuse while promoting the protective factors that have been found effective in reducing substance abuse. The Student Assistance Program offers ongoing support groups, provides crisis intervention services, and provides short term counseling services. Recommendations for additional services and referrals are also provided.
